Every single one of us carries shame! That dreadful feeling of badness, low self esteem, and unacceptability by those around us.
Every single one of us uses a variety of methods to not feel it. It is these avoidance maneuvers that prevent us from truly being ourselves and knowing how best to live our lives.
These maneuvers are so entrenched in the culture, so integrated into cultural consciousness, that they are difficult to see. I have studied them for a very long time, knowing that I had to see them for what they are rather than believe they are normal facets of being human. What people mean by “the human condition” isn’t human. It’s the response to carrying shame. Some examples are:
